CNS Channel 6 marks 20th anniversary

Television station, CNS Channel 6 celebrated 20 years of operations in Guyana yesterday and according to owner Chandranarine Sharma, the significant anniversary stimulates reflection.

CNS Channel 6 was established on June 7, 1992 in a section of Sharma’s house where the first broadcast  took place at a time when there were only three other television stations in existence, according to a press release from the TV station.

CNS put up this sign outside of its studio yesterday to mark its 20th anniversary.

During the TV station’s  early years, broadcasting hours were limited to 2-4 hours, and as the years progressed, the release added, the station offered the opportunity for the first time in Guyana to incorporate programmes such as death announcements, call-in sessions, the popular Voice of the People programme and coverage of local events.

The release also mentioned that CNS Channel 6 offers employment to 26 persons and has widened its scope to include coverage of international events and transmits  24 hours a day.

The management of CNS Channel 6 is hopeful that permission will be granted for setting up of a relay station so that the channel can reach persons in the interior, Linden and Berbice areas, the release stated.

The station has had its fair share of controversies over the years including two separate suspensions by the Jagdeo administration for violation of broadcast regulations.
