Boost for East Coast youth with disabilities

The Guyana Community Based Rehabilitation Programme (GCBRP) plans to install electronic equipment and construct a fence at its Golden Grove Resource Centre with funds provided from the Australian Government to enhance its Building Brighter Futures project for children with disabilities.

In a press release, the GCBRP said the project is being implemented under the Australian Government’s Direct Aid Programme that aims to enhance support for parents of children with disabilities. The Resource Centre located at President’s College Road, Golden Grove, will be upgraded to provide co-ordinated access to services and interventions, and support early interventions to maximise the potential of children with disabilities. This includes providing support for the integration of children with disabilities into community life with the provision of aides, expanded behavioural therapies for children who need it and increased training for staff and local professionals in order to meet specific individual needs.

The project will have a direct impact on a very disadvantaged and marginalised group of people by providing new facilities and equipment that will help them to develop their motor, social and independent living skills and boost their physical and mental health. In addition, it will foster the children’s integration into the wider community by providing a safe place for them to interact and socialise and practice what they have been taught.

According to the GCBRP, the project is in keeping with current policy and it will serve as a pilot for Guyana and the region by demonstrating the impact certain services can have on the development of persons with disabilities. At the close, the Brighter Futures project will be showcased to national and regional bodies with the aim of being a catalyst for the development of similar centres in other regions.

The GCBRP was registered as a Friendly Society in 1995 and is managed by a national committee whose members are elected by regional community-based rehabilitation groups.
