Mechanic critical after Stanleytown stabbing

A Roraima Airways mechanic is now in critical condition after he was stabbed during a confrontation with a man, after the man pushed his pregnant girlfriend into a canal at Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara on Sunday night.

Vishal Lall, 19, of Lot 60 Church Street, Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara was stabbed in the upper chest and the lower back in the attack and he is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). His assailant, meanwhile, is in custody at the Wales Police Station. A source close to the investigation revealed that the assailant is known to the police in the area and has similar matters before the court. The source added that those matters were always dismissed due to out-of-court settlements.

Lall’s girlfriend, Shonette Fraser, told Stabroek News that she was sitting on a bridge over the canal with a friend when one of her cousins, Robert ‘Junior’ Hendricks, approached in pursuit of a another man, whom he was trying to stab. The other man managed to escape into another yard. “When the other boy ask me for a pass, I get up and stand up on the bridge and allow them to pass but then Junior come and push me and my friend in the trench and run behind the other boy,” she related.

She added that one of her cousins, who witnessed the incident, went inside and informed Lall, who emerged with a piece of wood.

“When he come out I was crying because I was feeling pain in my belly, because I pregnant. And then, Vishal say ‘Weh he deh’ and like Junior hear and he run come back and as soon as Vishal go to raise he hand, Junior stab he to he heart and then when he fall down he jump pon he and stab he to he back,” Fraser added.

She stated that after Lall was stabbed twice, she began screaming. Hendricks, she added, was about to pounce on Lall again but was restrained by his mother and an uncle.

According to Fraser, she had been annoyed by Lall after he returned home from work some time around 8 pm on Sunday and asked to watch wrestling, while she was looking at a movie. As a result, she went and sat on the bridge.

Fraser’s mother said she was inside the house when she heard the commotion outside and on investigating she found her pregnant daughter amongst the two men covered in blood.
She said, “When I hear Vishal get stab I run out and find Shonette in blood so I start hollering ‘Shonette, Shonette move’ because I know how Robert stay and didn’t want he do she nothing.”

The woman added that after the ordeal, Hendricks was restrained and she immediately rushed Lall to the hospital, where he received treatment and was subsequently admitted and remains a patient.

“This boy [Hendricks] bad. One time he broadside one of me son fuh nothing and he always in fights and chopping up somebody or beating somebody up,” the woman related.
