MPs for school outreaches

The Speaker and Members of Parliament will next Thursday begin a two-day visit to schools in Regions Five and Six (Berbice) in an effort to “bring Parliament to life for our young people”.

Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman, told reporters at a media briefing on Friday that this step is a new initiative that hopefully will be extended throughout the life of the tenth Parliament. He said that the aim is to visit every region in Guyana and “to touch and meet students from as many schools as possible, starting with those schools that visited us”.

In addition to the school visits, the delegation will make a special appearance on DTV channel eight (Berbice) between 7 and 7:30 pm next Thursday.

Later, Trotman said in a press release that the delegation will comprise himself, MPs from the three political parties who will be accompanied by geographic constituency MPs, three parliamentary officers and representatives of the Regional Democratic Councils.

The release said that whether young people realize it or not the decisions made in Parliament have significant impact on their lives. “Too often Parliament can seem distant and remote,” the release said adding that in a bid to raise awareness, outreach activities to all the regions were proposed.
