When will the stelling be ready for the people of Region Two?

Dear Editor,

The numerous problems that have plagued the Supenaam Stelling have been well publicized and documented and up to this day it has not been determined with any degree of certainty who is to be blamed or whatever went wrong that caused the numerous delays in handing over, as well as the on-again, off-again manner in which this facility used to operate.

The question now is when will this much needed stelling be of maximum use and benefit to the people of this country, particularly the people of Region Two.

For the better part of three years, or even before the stelling was completed, several commitments were made by various persons, including the former and current Heads of State and also the Minister of Works, that the two ferries the Conway and the Tabitha would become operable plying the Parika-Supenaam route. The only thing that happened was that the ferries arrived, and from the political standpoint of a few, that was the most important thing that happened.

It would certainly be necessary to ask why these boats had to arrive before the construction of the additional adjacent structures to accommodate them began. The number of times the Works Minister announced a date for these boats to be commissioned, only to say later that this much anticipated service had to be further postponed, could not be counted on ten fingers; these would not be enough.  I think a lot of people have to stop taking the Minister seriously in relation to anything he says about these boats and the stelling. I think we can do without all the unfulfilled commitments that the Minister makes.

Yours faithfully,
Archie Cordis
