Soesdyke woman dies in house fire

The charred remains of a 68-year-old woman were removed from her Soesdyke home yesterday after a gas cylinder reportedly exploded, igniting a raging fire.
Hardai Singh, who lived alone at the East Bank Demerara house, was burnt to death after becoming trapped in the building.

According to sources, a gas cylinder exploded some time around 7.30 pm while the woman was sleeping. Neighbours, after noticing the fire as it engulfed the home, tried desperately to break down the doors to rescue the woman but failed in doing so.

Shortly after, screams were heard coming from the one bedroom, wooden house, but died away shortly after.

The Timehri Fire Service reportedly responded some 20-25 minutes later by which time the house was said to have been burnt almost completely to the ground.
