AAG awaiting IAAF ratification for Bascom’s qualifying time

President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Colin Boyce says that his association has sent a correspondence to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) seeking its sanction on the Olympic men’s 100m qualifying “B” standard that was achieved by US-based Guyanese sprinter Jeremy Bascom.

Bascom is reported to have run 10.21s in a men’s 100m at a New Jersey International Invitational meet.
If confirmed, Bascom’s 10.21 seconds falls within the 10.24s Olympic “B” standard, giving him the right to participate in one of the most hyped events at this year’s Olympic Games in London next month.

“We’ve sent to the IAAF for ratification. They need to confirm that the meet was an IAAF sanctioned meet. I don’t want to give myself too much liberty, but once we can confirm everything more than likely he will be added to the team to participate,” Boyce said when contacted by this publication yesterday.

Boyce also confirmed that the association was aware of a Olympic women’s 400m “B” standard qualifying time attained by Guyana’s US-based athlete Kadecia Baird.

However, Boyce said that Baird will not be participating at the Olympics due to several factors, the principal reason being that Guyana’s Aliann Pompey has already qualified for the event and countries are only allowed to enter one athlete under the “B” standard.

Should Bascom qualify he will be the sixth athlete to be added to Guyana’s humble team that will be participating at next month’s Summer Olympics in London, England.

Thus far Guyana has already confirmed that swimmers Niall Roberts (men’s 100m freestlye), and Britany van Lange (women’s 100m freestyle), athletes Pompey (women’s 400m) and Winston George (men’s 400m) and Judoka Raul Lall (Men’s -73 kg), will be attending the games
The men’s 100m is set to begin on August 4 with the preliminary rounds. The semi finals and the final will be held the following day.
