Family worried after ‘fake’ death message

Relatives of Ram ‘Jerry’ Ramdeen of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice are worried after receiving conflicting reports last Saturday that he was involved in an accident in Port Kaituma; they were then told that he had died, but later received a phone call from him.

Ramdeen who left for the interior in March had told his relatives that he was working for a “Russian company”.

Last week Saturday, the relatives said, Ramdeen called them and said he had been involved in an accident with a motorcycle “on the hilltop”. He told them he had broken his ribs and could not help himself and was in a hospital that was surrounded by bush. He said too that he was there with another man whose phone he would borrow to call.

He told them that they should not call the number because the man would be taking saline and he [Ramdeen] would not be able to move to answer the phone.

His sister, Bhagmattie ‘Bucky’ Ramdeen told this newspaper that around 10 pm on Wednesday a man who claimed to be the “boss” called to say that her brother was dead. He also said he was “putting ice on the body” and that he would bring it out the following morning. She said her mother and other relatives travelled to the Ogle Airport on Thursday and waited in vain the entire day. They then visited the Russian Embassy to get information about the company but the staff there did not know what they were referring to.

After that there were no more calls she said, until Friday evening when in the midst of grieving they heard from her brother who was crying bitterly.

He told them he was in a lot of pain and asked them to go and get him, but he could not provide information about his location or about the company he was working for.

She said they asked him why his employers were not bringing him out for medical treatment and he responded that they probably did not “want to spend money”. He later said that maybe they were holding him for ransom. He also said that the “boss gone away.”

His sister said “something seems fishy” and they are at their wits end to find out what exactly is going on.

They have reported the matter to the police in Berbice.
