Indigenous musician to perform at Umana Yana on Thursday

Famous indigenous Northern Plains Flute player, JJ Kent will perform at the Umana Yana on Thursday from 9 am.

Kent started learning Native American Courting Flute from his uncles since he was ten years old and is also a traditional story teller, cultural educator, speaker, dancer and recording artist.  Kent, whose Lakota name Wiscas Ho’ Waste’ means “Good Voice Man”, has a  country music recording career spanning over 30 years. He received the male vocalist of the year award from the Wyoming Country Music Association in 1990 for his debut country album ‘Free Spirit’, which also made it to #11 in Cashbox’s Top 100. All of his songs on his albums were composed by him and he also played the guitar and keyboards on his tracks.  Kent is an avid outdoorsman and received several years of traditional teaching from his grandfather and frequents the Indian reservations of Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and the Rocky Mountain High Country.
