Suspect in North West murder, chopping seen in Big Creek area

The suspect in the brutal chopping of the 16-year-old North West girl is hiding out in the Big Creek area where he is being reportedly supported by relatives and at nightfall would venture into the community to ‘sport’.

The teen’s brother, Orin Williams, has since said that she suffered abuse at the hands of the suspect, who she had been in a relationship with for about two years, before she was attacked with a sharpened cutlass on May 20.

The teen is still unable to speak.

Williams said his mother, Eltina, moved to Georgetown about one month ago to help care for his wounded sister. He said she recently contacted him saying that while the teen’s condition is improving, she is unable to speak.

He told this newspaper that the suspect is known to him.

He recalled that the teen told him several times that she was being beaten. He said she told him that the man “use to pound pound she skin one one time”.

The last time he heard this was some time before the incident when relatives called the teen who related that he “pound pound she”.

Williams recalled that on the day she was chopped the teen was transported to his home at Four Miles. His home is about two hours driving on a land cruiser or All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) from Big Creek.

He said when he saw his sister there was a gaping wound to her head and “she got a juk in she forehead”. He said she was not speaking but she was conscious.

The young man told this newspaper that according to information about the suspect from persons in the area, “every night he does sport, drink up and thing on the road”. He said he was told the man has two close male relatives living in the area and they would usually provide him with food and other necessities.

Williams said that according to the information provided, the suspect’s hiding place is behind a shop in the Big Creek area.

He said the police would be handicapped if they went into the area in search of him because they do not know what he looks like. “They want somebody to point him out.

Once you ain’t know a person, you can’t ketch a person,” he said, adding that persons are reluctant to pursue the man because of fear.

Though police officials have identified the suspect as a Pomeroon River resident, it is unclear why no wanted bulletin has been issued for him. Reports were that ranks had travelled into the area to investigate the incident which also resulted in the murder of Junior Joseph. They later left after finding no trace of the suspect.

The chopping came after the suspect who was operating a dredge reportedly caught the teen in a compromising position with Joseph, his employee.

Based on the information provided to this newspaper, the girl began a relationship with the suspect shortly after he moved to the area. He had been renting a house at Oronoque, Port Kaituma.

Stabroek News later learnt that the suspect first met the teen at a Kayamoo – a barrack-like accommodation for sex workers – where she was employed. He later took her to his mining camp to stay there with him.

The Child Care and Protection Agency along with the Ministries of Amerindian Affairs and Human Services had launched an investigation into how the girl ended up living in a mining camp but it is unclear if any headway was made.

The man had suspected that the girl was being unfaithful to him and decided to hatch a plan to catch her in the act.

Days before the incident the man travelled out of the area leaving her in charge of the camp and some time later informed her that he was sending in supplies for the dredge and would travel to the location two or three days after.

On the day of the chopping, as promised, the man sent in a cruiser vehicle loaded with supplies for the dredge, but was in another vehicle which travelled closely behind.

Reports are that when the man arrived at his camp he found Joseph and the teen in a compromising position and went berserk.

From all indications, he caught Joseph off guard and began chopping him on his neck as the teen stood helplessly nearby.

When Joseph’s neck was almost severed from his body, the man turned his attention and his cutlass on the teen.
