Digicel America St store loses millions in burglary

The Digicel store on America Street, in Georgetown was burglarised over the weekend and millions of dollars in cellular phones and other items were carted off.

The thieves even had enough time to dismantle the six security cameras located on the premises.

The Digicel Store back in business yesterday after unknown persons broke in and stole almost all its products.

Manager Michael Haywood told Stabroek News that the store was locked up around midday on Saturday and when he arrived around 7.30 am yesterday, he found the interior in disarray.

From Haywood’s explanation, the perpetrators managed to cut the lock on the grill door at the side of the building, which was protecting a shutter door. After getting past the grill gate, they prized open the shutter door and gained entry to the back of the store.

Haywood stated that the perpetrators then forced open an inner door, which had been locked from the outside, and made their way into the main display area.

The majority of the phones in the store, ranging between high end and regular handsets, two computer systems and the DVRs from the security cameras were taken.

There was no full estimate of the cost of the items stolen when this newspaper spoke with Haywood, since the company’s operations manager was still tallying prices. He noted, however, that there was no doubt that the losses would be in the millions.

Haywood said that it was the first break-in in the three years that the store has been open at that location. He added that no one in the area reported hearing any strange noises prior to the discovery of the burglary.

The store was back in operation later yesterday morning, after receiving some handsets from another location.
The police, meanwhile, are currently conducting investigations.
