Mon Repos mother of four dies after beaten

A 38-year-old mother of four died on Sunday last while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after she was beaten mercilessly, allegedly by her ex-husband, over a week ago.

A post-mortem examination performed on her body revealed that she died as a result of multiple injuries inflicted by a blunt instrument.

Dead is Seekumarie ‘Hema’ Singh of 3rd Street, Martyrsville, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. Singh reportedly received a sound beating at the hands of her ex-husband over a week ago. The woman received several cuts and bruises about her body and on Sunday started complaining of intense abdominal pain and was taken to the GPH by her reputed husband; she later succumbed.

According to the dead woman’s sister, Kamla Singh, her sister was not close to the family and since she had been repeatedly changing husbands the family was unaware of her sufferings. She added that they received a call from someone informing them of her sister’s death.

The grieving woman related that they were informed that Seekumarie Singh received a sound beating at the hands of her ex-husband, Budar (only name given), while her current husband, Squash (only name given), was out working at sea. Kamla Singh said that after the incident, well over a week ago, her sister was reportedly told, by Budar, to go home and rest.

The family was informed that when Squash, returned home on Saturday last the woman started to complain of intense abdominal pain and was rushed to the GPH after the pain became much more intense on Sunday.

At the hospital she was immediately examined by the doctors on duty and was being attended to when she succumbed some time around 11.30 am.

The family of the dead woman said they were told that the police are treating the case as one of murder and are currently on the hunt for Budar.

According to a relative of the dead woman, when they first saw the body on Sunday it told a story of a battered woman who had tried to conceal the injuries she received. The relative said there were several marks on Seekumarie Singh’s body that indicated that she had been beaten with a piece of wood coupled with a sharp object.

The woman said her relative did not deserve to die under those circumstances and demanded a full investigation into her death.
