Absentee CJIA ramp attendant wanted over 50lbs cocaine bust

Police are searching for a ramp attendant attached to a handling service at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri, in connection with last weeks’ 50 pound cocaine bust.

Stabroek News was told by security officials at the airport that the man has not reported for duty since the drugs were discovered by anti-narcotics agents last Thursday evening.

An airport source said yesterday that the attendant has been under surveillance by security officials at Timehri over the past several weeks. Reports are that following the bust, checks were made by the police at several places for the man, including his residence, but there has been no trace of him.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told Stabroek News yesterday that the police are still following leads in the matter. He said that several persons are still being questioned by the police, while adding that investigations into the bust are continuing.

The $25M worth of cocaine was intercepted by law enforcement agencies in an unclaimed bag that was on a trolley being prepared for loading on an outgoing Caribbean Airlines flight, which was expected to depart for the JFK airport in New York. The drugs were wrapped in plastic in more than 20 parcels.

In March this year, two duffle bags containing 10 kilos of cocaine were found on the airside of the CJIA near the perimeter fence. An engineer attached to a local airline stumbled upon the two bags while working in the area.

No one was charged in connection with that incident.
