Committee seeks gov’t help for disabled support centres

Members of the National Disabled People’s Network (DPN) committee yesterday met with President Donald Ramotar in hopes of getting support for construction of centres outfitted for persons with physical challenges.

“I am blind and I may be able to walk up any place but my sister in a wheelchair would need something special to get into the building,” Chairman of the National DPN Commit-tee, Lloyd Griffith told the Government Information Agency (GINA), after what he described as a satisfactory meeting with President Ramotar and Minister of Human Services and Social Security Jennifer Webster.  The committee represents DPN units in regions Two, Four, Five, Six and Seven sought assistance for the centres, for which GINA said plots of land have been identified at Vryman’s Erven in Region Six and another in Region Seven. An overseas donor has promised to finance the construction of one of the buildings, it added.

Authorisation from the government is needed before construction can commence, according to Griffith, who also sought assistance to cover the coast of transportation which the group believes is critical to its work. Public assistance was also discussed at the meeting, GINA added.
