GCCI corporate members donate $1.5M for UG short films project

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), through its corporate members, donated $1.5 million in sponsorship to the University of Guyana Centre for Communication Studies yesterday to facilitate the production of short films.

The donations came from Digicel, which gave $1 million, Courts Guyana, which donated $250,000, and Germans Restaurant, which also donated $250,000 according to a press release from GCCI.

This initiative represents the chamber’s effort to support and contribute to the expansion of a new and emerging industry that has the potential to generate enormous revenues for Guyana and also to serve as a significant marketing vehicle, the release added.

The University of Guyana’s Centre for Communication Studies has created a well-received and widely acknowledged incubator base for developing Guyana’s film industry. As a result of this initiative, the release noted, emerging Guyanese filmmakers have made significant strides in gaining the skills base within a remarkably short time that is essential for making top-quality narrative films.

These recent developments has placed Guyana in a position to cultivate its regional leadership in the film industry sector, which would include promoting and marketing Guyana as an ideal location for film production, given the country’s favourable climate, topography and diverse options for landscaping scenes the release added.
