Vryheid’s Lust man accused of armed assault on woman, minor

A man who allegedly assaulted a woman and a minor with his firearm was yesterday placed on $80,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Edward Hubert McCullen, 33, of Lot 67 South Vryheid’s Lust, pleaded not guilty to both counts of assault.

McCullen, said to be a former security guard for retired Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai, is alleged to have on August 10, at Georgetown, unlawfully assaulted Natoya James and Nikhail Moore.

The facts presented by the prosecution of the day in question were that the defendant and the virtual complainants were at a party, and following an argument, McCullen used his firearm and struck Moore and James.

McCullen was unrepresented by counsel but made an application for bail.
The prosecution made no objection to bail and it was set at $80,000. He is due to return on September 24.
