Responsible leadership, not finger-pointing needed to solve Linden crisis

The Justice and Peace Commission (JPC) of the Roman Catholic Church has called for an end to “political finger-pointing” over the Linden crisis, while saying the nation’s leaders must act responsibly to bring an end to the situation.

“The church calls for an immediate end to the political finger-pointing and grandstanding,” the JPC said yesterday in a statement, where it condemned the resort to fires and pre-dawn operations in Linden, regardless of the true sequence of events.

It warned that the “finger-pointing and grandstanding” are counterproductive and do no good in the throes of “this grave crisis” and it called upon leaders to “stop fiddling with meaningless public exchanges” as Linden burns.

“Now is the time for parliament to be reconvened on an emergency basis, where healing and authentic nation building will take precedence over narrow political interests,” the JPC declared.

It added that there is a crying need for the discipline of restraint from all involved and for all the talking to move away from the streets and airwaves to the table of discussion. “Sanity, wisdom, and focus are sorely needed, if this tense, potentially dangerous, situation is to be defused; and a mutually satisfactory resolution achieved,” the JPC said. “Now is the time for all leaders and representatives-inclusive of political, religious, community, civil, and other non-governmental bodies-to act responsibly, and to manifest the appropriate interest and motivation to bring an end to this very troubling situation,” it added.
