Mason gets $350,000 bail over theft of car, other items

A 21-year-old mason accused of stealing a motorcar and other items totaling $4.3M was yesterday placed on $350,000 bail when he made his appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.

The allegation against Kadafi Prettipaul is that on August 12 at Georgetown, he stole from Vonte Alleyne one Toyota AT 212 motorcar valued $3.5M, US$3,000, $163,000 and a cell phone and charger valued $38,000, all totaling $4.3M.

The defendant denied the simple larceny charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Attorney for Prettipaul,  Trenton Lake, made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail, stating that he has no antecedents, poses no risk of flight and has a fixed address at 144 Section B Block X, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.

Lake in his bail application said too that his client is asthmatic. Counsel asked the court to view the charge leveled against his client with “suspicion,” stating that the figures mentioned in the charge were “inflated prices.”

The presiding magistrate, however, said that what the court did find “alarming” was the price for the car.

The prosecution had no objections to the bail application made by the lawyer.

No details of what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court.  The matter was transferred to Court One for September 27 for report and fixture.
