Overseas-based Guyanese arrested after cheque bounces

An overseas-based Guyanese man is in police custody after he purchased electrical items from a Kitty Store with a cheque that later bounced. The man has since accused ranks of assaulting him.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud when contacted yesterday confirmed that the man was in police custody after being arrested Monday night. He said that based on reports, the man used a $1M cheque to purchase the items from the store but when the storeowner tried to cash it, the cheque bounced.

As a result, a report was made to the police, who later visited the man’s home, where some of the items were recovered. Persaud said that the man then took police to another location, where several more items he purchased using the cheque were recovered.

Persaud explained that the man was arrested outside a popular East Bank Demerara hotel and video footage there showed when he was arrested and placed in the police vehicle.

The Crime Chief said that while in detention, the man alleged that he was assaulted by ranks but a medical examination proved that the allegation was untrue. According to Persaud, the doctor found no marks of violence on his body.

He added that the man will soon be charged with obtaining upon a forged instrument.

Stabroek News was unable to contact any of the man’s relatives yesterday.
