Wife hammering accused commits suicide

Joseph Taylor, the man who was accused of brutally assaulting his partner with a hammer, died yesterday at the Georgetown Hospital after he ingested a poisonous substance.

Taylor, of Lot 155 Prashad Nagar, Georgetown and 111 Block ‘12’, Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara, was rushed to the hospital yesterday morning after he consumed the poison.

“We can’t give no information right now,” a relative of his said when this newspaper visited his Prashad Nagar home yesterday.

Taylor, a vendor and a popular West Indies cricket fan and showman, was accused of beating his reputed wife Eureka Garraway unconscious with a hammer during the month of April.

The police had issued a wanted bulletin for him over one month after the April 4th attack, after which he surrendered himself.

He was later arraigned before Magistrate Nyasha Hatmin at the Cove and John Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge of feloniously wounding Garraway at her relatives’ Non Pareil home on April 4th. Magistrate Hatmin had placed him on $50,000 bail.

Relatives of Garraway had accused Taylor of years of abuse on the woman, with the April attack resulting in her being admitted to a private hospital for over two weeks, constantly lapsing in and out of consciousness and sustaining a huge wound to her skull that required over 100 sutures.

According to the woman’s relatives, the incident occurred several hours after Garraway left her Prashad Nagar home that she shared with the man. They said the couple had an argument about the woman visiting her relatives.

Garraway was discovered on a blood-soaked bed and although she thought she could recover without medical attention, she eventually lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital.

But Garraway, aged 38, has already given a statement to police clearing him of any wrongdoing against her during the attack.

She had also told this newspaper that while he beat her, she was not hit with a hammer and was never rendered unconscious. She stated that she still loved him and believed he would change, adding that she would stand by his side.
