Search on after NA woman ‘falls’ into river

The police are leading a search in the Berbice River for a woman who reportedly fell off the gangway leading to a boat moored at Everton, East Bank Berbice early yesterday morning.

Roxanne Brewster, 34, of Lot 43 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, is feared drowned, while police said that two men are in custody assisting with the investigations.

Police, in a statement, said that about 2:30am yesterday, Brewster is reported to have fallen into the Berbice River while walking across a gangway. She has not been seen since, police noted.

Brewster’s mother spoke briefly with Stabroek News at their home and said that she was not comfortable disclosing information in case persons begin speculating. In addition, she said the family is awaiting feedback from police officials and she does not intend to disrupt the investigation.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she is only aware of her daughter going to the New Amsterdam bar where she works as a maid but does know what transpired while there.

Brewster was said to have left her workplace, the Rainbow Bar, in the company of four sailors, who were there drinking while their boat was being loaded on the bank of the Berbice River.

Brewster is a mother of one.
