Trio on armed robbery charges get bail

Three men were yesterday accused of committing a pair of armed robberies.

Mortimer John, a carpenter, of Lot 16 Tucville Drive, South Ruimveldt, Terry Phillips, a labourer, also of the same address, and Gavin Lovell, a miner, were jointly charged with two counts of armed robbery, for which they were placed on $75,000 bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on August 28, armed with a knife, they robbed Teneshia Garnett of a BlackBerry smartphone and gold chain, valuing $100,000 in total, and Madane Humphrey, of his BlackBerry, wallet and cash, valuing $65,000 in total.

No details on what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court and the men were not required to enter pleas as the charges were indictable.

Attorney George Thomas, who appeared for Phillips, stated that his client had no previous convictions or pending matters before the court and did not pose a flight risk and therefore he sought bail.

With no objection from the prosecution save that the three men should report to the East La Penitence Police station every Tuesday and Friday at 9 am, Magistrate Faith McGusty granted bail.

The matters are to be called again at Court One October 8, for reports and fixtures.
