Schoolgirl struck down on pedestrian crossing recovering

The condition of Akeisha Jackman, the Brickdam Secondary School  student who was struck down last Monday is improving while she remains a patient of the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the Georgetown Hospital her mother, Althea Jackman, said yesterday.

Akeisha was hit by a car as she was about to cross on a pedestrian crossing at Flour Mill Road, Eccles, East Bank Demerara,

Her mother added that she was also able to speak with her when she visited her yesterday despite the head injuries she received. A Computerized Tomography (CT scan) that was performed on the girl earlier revealed that she has a fractured skull and a clot in her brain. Another scan is expected to be conducted to determine if the clot is still in her brain.

Akeisha was on her way home from school when the accident occurred. She had reportedly stepped out of a bus and was at the pedestrian crossing waiting to cross when she was hit by the car.

The driver of the car was taken into police custody after the accident but was subsequently released on station bail, her mother said.
