President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) Colin Bynoe has promised that this year’s 52nd annual National School’s Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships will be better coordinated than last year’s staging.

Bynoe made this disclosure yesterday in the Ministry of Education’s boardroom during the formal launch of this year’s annual four-day championships which will commence on November 19 at the Providence National Stadium.

Last year’s event was marred by several glitches which saw the organisers  shelving some of the events and not using the floodlights on some nights.

“We expect that this one will be bigger and better and much more organized. We are hoping to get that out of this championship that is what we are working towards,” Byone told the media yesterday.

The GTU president added:“I would like to know that the championships this year will be much better than last year’s.
We hope the glitches that we had last year are erased and that we have a better showing this year.”

He also disclosed that the GTU will partner with more of the Ministry of Education’s staff to better coordinate this year’s National Championships.

“We have decided to get more Ministry of Education staff involved. Don’t forget that the Guyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) has been doing this for quite sometime. Now the Ministry of Education has taken it back so they are learning certain things gradually so with that, we are hoping as we share experiences with each other, things are going to get better.

“With the help of sponsorship, we can alleviate a lot of problems; it’s the third year for some members of the ministry so they should do better, but we, at the Guyana Teacher’s Union, with our institutional memory, we will try our best to make sure we make these championships a better one.

“There are a lot of people who want to use athletes to make something off of them.Anyone we see doing that this year we will expose them and make sure the media does a good spread because we don’t feel our athletes should be manipulated for other people’s objectives.”

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand stated that each sport is a discipline and that sport can be very useful in the conduct of young people and that she expects the championships to run off in a disciplined and a well co-ordinated manner.
