Sophia labourer on bail over birdcage robbery

A man was yesterday accused of stealing a bird cage in an armed robbery in Sophia.

Jarvis King, 22, of 33 North Sophia, denied the armed robbery charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where his bail was set at $75,000.

It was alleged that on April 23, in Georgetown, being armed with a gun, King, a labourer, stole a bird cage valued $6,000. It was the property of Alex Persaud.

King and Persaud were known to each other at the time of the robbery, which is alleged to have occurred at a shop in Sophia.

Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said that Persaud was in the shop with his cage, in which he had a ‘Towa-Towa’ bird. Mansfield said the man noticed that King picked up the bird cage and walked out of the shop and he ran behind him. During a subsequent confrontation, Mansfield said, King pulled out a gun and then made good his escape.

The matter was then reported to the Kitty Police Station and King was later arrested and charged.

In making a bail application, attorney James Bond, who represented King, said his client had no previous or pending matters in the court system and posed no flight risk. With no objections being offered by the prosecution, King was granted bail and the matter was transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for September 24.
