The NCN debates provided for two government and two opposition representatives

Dear Editor,

Yet again there is another attempt by AFC Vice- Chairman Moses Nagamootoo to perpetuate his  distortions and misinformation. The Kaieteur News article yesterday, titled, ‘Nagamootoo calls for continuation of NCN debates’ should not go unchallenged for one moment.

Mr Nagamootoo is aware that the NCN seven-part debate series provided for equal representation from the government and opposition, precisely, two spaces for each group. The others who appeared on the debates were experts in the specific subject area and there was a civil society representative on each panel. NCN cannot be responsible for the absence of APNU which opted out the debate series.

The only reason why Mr Nagamootoo would deliberately refuse to mention the fact that provisions were made for the opposition to have two representatives at each debate is because he believes his omission would miss the attention of Guyanese.

You cannot say the debate was useful and at the same time undermine this very sentiment by offering distortion and misinformation. Mr Nagamootoo is behaving like the cricketer who blames the loss of the game on the bat and not his skills.

As for his other comments, specifically the one regarding his perception of the government’s lack of openness, society has already judged this to be pure rhetoric given the fact that the debates provided for the opposition to produce specific evidence of corruption against the government and they were found wanting.

It is absolutely clear that the opposition is more about spreading rumours, propaganda and wild assertions.

Yours faithfully,
Kwame McCoy
