An autopsy conducted on the body of the late Abdul Zameer Abrahim revealed that the former resident of 259 Sixth Street, Success, East Coast Demerara died from a fractured neck and severed spine.
Abrahim was laid to rest yesterday at La Bonne Intention (LBI) Cemetery following a small service
which took place at his former residence.
The man, who made his living as a joiner, died last Saturday on the Railway Embankment Road, Chateau Margot, some distance from the well known Chimney Street. According to relatives as well as an eyewitness who knew the victim, he was making his way home from work when he was hit by a speeding silver-grey Toyota truck.
Chairman of the Chateau Margot Community Policing group, who referred to himself as “Prim”, said that he rushed out to the road after hearing a loud “slam” while watching television at home. Prim related that considering the distance the man was flung from where he was hit, “the vehicle had to be moving at a considerable speed”. He said he came to the conclusion that the man was dead after he attempted to check for a pulse but could not find one. Chairman was also the one who informed the dead man’s relatives of what had transpired.
According to Regha Ram, the dead man’s uncle, the post-mortem examination (PME), which was done on Monday, revealed that Abrahim had succumbed as a result of a fractured neck and severed spine. The autopsy also found that in addition to his lethal wounds, the man also sustained bruises and lacerations about the body, as well as a gaping hole on the side of his head. However, the fracture was the sole reason for the man’s death, Ram said.
Abrahim’s family, as well as other residents of the area who knew him expressed concern that the now dead man might have been drinking before he began his journey home. But they said they were certain that he would not have been too intoxicated to effectively navigate the roads.
Ram also told Stabroek News that when he visited the Beterverwagting (BV) Police Station, where the driver of the silver-grey Toyota was taken, it was disclosed that breathalyzer test carried out on the man revealed that his alcohol level was above the legal limit. However, according to Ram, the man claimed that he only had two beers that night.
