Appeal against Anna Regina vendors commences

An appeal filed against an injunction which was granted to vendors of the Anna Regina Municipality has commenced in the High Court.

Almost five years ago, vendors of the Anna Regina Market were granted an injunction against the Anna Regina Town Council, which effectively prevented the council from moving them from the market to a new buildingwhich had been built at Cotton Field, Essequibo Coast, to accommodate them.

Vendors, who said they had singlehandedly built the Anna Regina Municipal Market over some 40 years, were indignant. They said that they would not trade the old market for the new one and eventually moved to the courts after hiring a battery of lawyers. One of their contentions was that the new market would be in operation on Fridays, compared to be operating in a market, which continues to serve Essequibians on a daily basis.

They were granted an injunction and the council subsequently appealed it. But while the appeal has commenced, a source has informed that the Anna Regina Town Council is no longer inclined to pursue the matter against the vendors.
