Surinamese man reported for illegal entry after police complaint against sis-in-law

A Surinamese national, who was reported as an illegal immigrant by his sister-in-law after he made a complaint to the police that she abused his six-year-old son, was yesterday remanded to prison.

Ashlee Khan, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday admitted to entering Guyana by sea on April 24 of this year, without notifying immigration officials.

Khan told the court that he lived in Suriname and had a Guyanese wife and child who would regularly visit him there. He added that after some time, he decided to come to Guyana and live with his family.

He later stated that his sister-in-law would constantly abuse his son, and he added that he had cause to make a report to the police after she dealt a lash to the boy’s face, causing injury. He added that as a result of the report the police went to their home and his sister-in-law told police that he was in the country illegally and he was arrested and charged.

After his explanation, a not-guilty plea was recorded for the accused.

The prosecution objected to bail, stating that if Khan is granted his pre-trial liberty, he could flee the jurisdiction. The magistrate then remanded the accused and adjourned the case until October 16.
