UG students screening Great Wonders of Guyana 2 at Theatre Guild

Senior students at the Centre for Communication Studies at the University of Guyana are hosting five documentaries they produced titled ‘Great Wonders of Guyana 2’ at the Theatre Guild on Saturday.

The documentaries are about 12 minutes long and the students filmed them as part of their final-year course work requirement, a press release said. The project, which is screened publicly, is usually graded by two or more external examiners and one internal examiner. It was given the title ‘Great Wonders of Guyana 2’ as it follows on the heels of three documentaries that were produced in 2010 with funding from the Office of the President which had given the films the title ‘Great Wonders of Guyana 1’.

This year’s films are Baby Mothers which tells inspiring stories about how three teenage mothers have gotten a new lease on life; Guyana: The Big Picture is said to “[go] deeper than the urban Guyana that everyone knows” and looks at Guyana’s geo-political importance as a regional transportation hub and breadbasket. It runs for 10 minutes.

All Bady Waan Bady: 10th Anniversary of the Guyana Cultural Foundation of New York looks at the work of a small group of dedicated Guyanese who have promoted Guyana in New York over the last 10 years. “Together that [have] created one of the most successful Guyanese festivals abroad,” the release said. Guyana: The Way We Love looks at the extraordinary acts of ordinary Guyanese in everyday life. The Legend of Balgobin is a docudrama that enacts some of the funniest Balgobin stories while attempting to explain the legend from a socio-linguistic perspective.

The films will be aired from 1 to 3 pm and the public is invited free of cost. Viewers are also encouraged to pose questions or make comments.
