Escape windows have to be built into security grill works

Dear Editor,

Please allow me to extend my condolences to the family and friends of the victims of the recent Charlestown fire. My prayers are with them.

Private residences should start incorporating standard escape windows into their security grill works. This is done by building a minimum 2 x 2 feet window into the standard grill on a window. This fire escape window is kept locked with one to three padlocks, which are all opened with one key. The key is stored a maximum 2 feet away from the window in a small red painted cupboard.

The number of fire escape windows in a residence can be installed as desired or as necessary.

Simple designs like these are used in the Caribbean and are part of the standard building codes.

Yours faithfully,
Chris Moses
