Guyana’s Braithwaite crowned best individual rifle shooter

Guyana’s Lennox Braithwaite was crowned the top rifle shooter in the Caribbean when he won the grand aggregate as the curtains came down on the individual competition at the West Indies Rifle Shooting championships at the Timehri ranges yesterday.

Capitalizing on his second day lead, Braithwaite, a former national captain amassed 388 points with 19 V-bulls to win the championship, while compatriots, Team Captain Mahendra Persaud, Dylan Fields and Ransford Goodluck claimed the other three top places.

Persaud finished second with 380 points and 23 V-bulls with Fields amassing 378 with 20 V-bulls for third place and Goodluck fourth with 375-15 V-bulls.

Jamaican John Nelson finished fifth with 370-17, Norris Gomez of Trinidad and Tobago 367-15, Jose Nunez of Jamaica 365-16, Trinidadian Carl Awong 364-14, David Rickman of Jamaica 362-15 and Steven Chung of Trinidad and Tobago 362-14 rounding off the top ten.

Chung was declared the top shooter in ‘O’ Class.

Individual scores of yesterday’s shoot were unavailable up to press time owing to the ongoing unrest on the East Bank Demerara.

Several shooters, officials and media personnel were stranded on the East Bank.

Meanwhile, the team competition will take place tomorrow and Sunday.

Six countries – Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and host Guyana are competing in the regional championships.
