Rebuke over indecent language ended in stabbing – court hears

A man who allegedly stabbed another after he was rebuked over the use of expletives, was yesterday arraigned on a charge of unlawful and malicious assault, before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

David Green, 24, a labourer, of 3028 North Ruimveldt, is alleged to have unlawfully and maliciously wounded Renato Gamel, so as to cause him actual bodily harm on February 14, in Georgetown.

Green pleaded not guilty to the charge after the Administration of Justice Act was applied by the prosecution.

The prosecution’s facts are that on the day in question, about 21:00 hrs, Gamel and his brother-in-law were in his yard when Green walked in and used indecent language. He was rebuked by Gamel, reportedly became annoyed and pulled out a knife and stabbed him, Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick stated.

The accused, who had previous brushes with the law for the same nature of offence, pleaded with the magistrate to grant him pre-trial liberty.

The prosecution had no objections to bail, except that it should be granted in a substantial amount.

The magistrate then granted Green bail in the sum of $250,000.

He will make his next court appearance on November 9 for the filing of statements. The case was called at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
