Lusignan road works done specially for President’s visit

Dear Editor,
We the residents of Lusignan South would like to bring to your attention the gross disrespect meted out to us recently.
The state of our main road leading to the Guysuco cultivation has always been in a deplorable state. During the past fifteen years, maintenance work must have been done to it well over ten times. This mainly “election” road work simply insults the intelligence of ordinary residents. As a major thoroughfare to the Lusignan prison, the Lusignan dump site and Guysuco backlands, we believe that we deserve better.

For a long while, we have allowed common sense to prevail by not making public this blatant disregard of our village as we understand that development takes time and so we may have to wait our time. A recent development, however, has tilted the scale. You will know that Lusignan is home to the only Golf course in Guyana. We prattle about tourism and blow lots of our coffer’s money in this direction and cannot but see that golf is a major attraction to visitors especially from outside the diaspora.

It’s a gross shame that the foreigners, whose knock on effect to others can enhance tourism to Guyana, have to plough through a seemingly abandoned road to reach the golf course.

You will not believe the presumptuousness of our Authorities. The Lusignan Golf Course hosted the President’s Cup Trophy Competition on Sunday 16 September, 2012. During the week leading up to the competition, the intense road building activity by the Ministry of Works was relentless. Excessively  bad parts were graded and filled with stone. Parts were asphalted. We were very happy to know that we were at least getting away from the Abortion Clinic. Lo and behold! The work was incomplete before the President arrived but was smooth enough for a comfortable ride.

Now that the President has left, so too have the employees of the Ministry of Works, leaving the unfinished work behind, maybe for his next visit. We thought the President took an oath to serve and not be served. Or is it a case that he is unaware!

Yours faithfully,
Concerned resident of Lusignan
