Bail for accused in gold bands theft

The accused in the theft of gold bands was yesterday placed on bail after denying the charge.

Kevin James, 23, of Berbice, is alleged to have committed the larceny on October 22, in Georgetown. It is alleged that he stole three gold bands, valued at $40,000, and which were the property of Alesha Khan.

James pleaded not guilty to the offence.

No details of the theft were given to the court, although James said he was beaten by a plain clothes policeman.

In addition, Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry that the accused was charged on three occasions but was never convicted for the offences as the cases were dismissed.

Bostwick had no objections to bail, which was set at $40,000.

The matter was transferred to Court 10 for reports and fixtures on November 1.
