Three Guyanese including a policewoman died this afternoon in Nickerie, Suriname after the car they were travelling in ended up in a canal.
Police Commissioner (ag) Leroy Brumell confirmed that Andrea Isaacs, the secretary of the Police Finance Department is among the dead. Isaacs, he said, was on her annual vacation.
The names of the other two are unknown.
Sources in Suriname said the details surrounding the accident are sketchy. They said that a fourth occupant of the car is in a serious condition in hospital and has been unable to provide information to police investigators.
Stabroek News understands that the cause of the accident which occurred around 5 pm might have been a tire blowout. This apparently resulted in the driver losing control and veering into a nearby canal.
By the time rescuers pulled them out the trio was already dead.
