Guards accused of stealing $2M during bank deposits

George King, 49, a PGS Commander, and Marcus Sergeant, 44, a Deputy Commander, are alleged to have received the money  from the Survival Supermarket in four depository bags but failed to deposit it at the Bank of Nova Scotia.

King and Sergeant, employed with the security service for five and four years, respectively, were not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to them at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat represented the two men and he proclaimed that their innocence to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

On the night of the alleged theft, Fung-a-Fat said, King and Sergeant along with three other crew members travelled to different banks to make deposits but encountered difficulties in doing so.

He questioned the reason why the other three men were not charged like his clients, whom he said were positioned at the front of the vehicle and had no knowledge of what transpired at the rear.

He also claimed that the men deposited the money at the bank’s Carmichael Street branch and suggested that there could have been an error with the bank.

Marcus Sergeant

There was no objection to the two men being released on bail but the prosecution did request that they report at the Brickdam Police Station every Monday at 8am.

The Chief Magistrate granted the prosecution’s request and set bail in the sum of $250,000 for each man. The case was adjourned until November 16 for reports and fixtures.
