Dutch Bottle reopens more than a year after bandit attack

More than a year after the proprietor of the Dutch Bottle Café was beaten while trying to avert an attack by three bandits who invaded the business, the establishment has been reopened.

The doors to the Lot 10 North Road, Bourda, Georgetown, establishment were opened once again during the first week of November in response to customers’ demands, but the business is now being managed by another member of the Chuck-a-Sang family.

Renata Chuck-a-Sang was gun-butted several times on October 7, 2011, while defending her business.

When Stabroek News contacted Chuck-a-Sang last evening, she stated that her brother will now manage the business, which has been slightly altered. She explained that it has been transformed into a bar and will offer some menu items. However, for the Christmas season, she said, reservations will be taken.

The woman said that after a year, she and her family decided that it was time to resume business, but the main reason for the reopening was the many requests by customers who asked for the service.

During last year’s attack, the restaurateur had lunged towards one of three bandits, who had invaded the restaurant, pinning him to the ground. Her actions led to the arrest of the individual, who later succumbed while under police arrest. He was identified as Kelvin Poonsammy, 22, of Lot 12 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge.

Poonsammy had two accomplices who managed to escape with a laptop which had two hard drives and a cellular phone. While he was restrained by Chuck-a-Sang, Poonsammy had severely beaten the woman to the head with his gun.
She suffered two facial fractures and was required to have some 50 stitches,  she had told Stabroek News. She was discharged from hospital about two weeks later.
