Ex-Banks DIH worker accused of stealing over $1M in cable

A former employee of Banks DIH was yesterday charged with stealing over $1M in items from the company.

Rudy Khelawan denied the charges but was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that between October 18 and October 19, at Thirst Park, Khelawan, 45, of Lot 31 Grove Housing Scheme, stole two heat shrinkable termination kits, valued $250,000 and property of Banks DIH.

It is further alleged that on the dates in question, he stole 87 feet of armoured cable, valued $1.3M and also property of the company.

The court was told that persons in the area saw Khelawan in the Banks DIH compound at Thirst Park stripping pieces of wire.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman said that after Khelawan was spotted, an alarm was raised and personnel from the company saw him running out of the compound.

Blackman, however, noted that during Khelawan’s attempt to escape, public-spirited citizens captured him and he later arrested.

Given the opportunity to address the court, Khelawan said, “they de owe me money like fah three weeks and them ain’t pay me till they eventually knock me off. I didn’t do nun.” He further alleged that because he went to the company on a number of occasions, it fabricated the charges against him. Blackman’s application for Khelawan’s to be denied bail was successful after the prosecutor told the court that the accused provided police with the wrong address in the Diamond Housing Scheme. Khelawan is due to make his next court appearance on November 30 for reports and fixtures.
