Botanical Gardens gets facelift

As part of activities planned to commemorate Tourism Awareness Month, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism carried out several enhancement projects in the Botanical Gardens.

In a press release, the Government Information Agency announced that members of the media were taken on a walk through the gardens to observe several enhancements, including the installation and painting of speed bumps on the roads in the gardens and the erection of signs in strategic locations to reduce the pace of drivers traversing in and out and to indicate the speed limit respectively.

Other works included the refurbishing of the plaque dedicated to bird watchers, painting of the bandstand, the walk-way, benches, plant pots, and the installation of welcome signs at the back of the gardens.

Indranauth Haralsingh, Director of the GTA said that the project involves partnership, and that everything that is done by the GTA and the Ministry of Tourism is aimed at creating value. He added that the Ministry initiates projects jointly with other organizations to share cost, giving corporate Guyana the opportunity to give back to the community.

Among those working on the project were the Botanical Gardens, Penta Paints, students from the University of Guyana, the National Park Commission, the Guyana Amazon Tropical Bird Society and the Ministry of Public Works.

Haralsingh indicated that the Ministry will continue to work with the management of the gardens to enhance its visitors’ experience.

The Botanical Gardens has been declared a bird sanctuary because of the 167 species of birds that choose to live there, and is a place where people can relax with family and friends.
