Man in court over fatal NA hit-and-run

A driver, allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident in New Amsterdam (NA) was released on $220,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at the Reliance Court yesterday.

The court heard that around 8:45 pm on November 25, Elson Inniss, 34, drove his Toyota Camry motorcar PDD 5925 in a dangerous manner causing the death of Sastia Phillips called ‘Sassy’ of Islington, East Bank Berbice.

Inniss of Amsville Housing Scheme, NA was also charged with failure to stop and failure to render assistance. He was granted $200,000 bail for the first charge and $10,000 bail each for the other offences.

This newspaper learnt that the defendant who was driving at a fast rate did not stop at the scene. Police and the victims’ relatives conducted searches but only managed to locate the damaged car which they took possession of.

The following day the suspect, on the advice of his lawyer, Joel Persid Edmond and in company of relatives, turned himself in at the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.

Reports are that Phillips and her family were walking along Main & Asylum Streets, NA when she was struck from behind.

She was rushed to the NA Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
