Thieves rob Bourda Market stall

Between Sunday night and yesterday morning, one or more thieves robbed a Bourda Market grocery store of money and foodstuff and attempted to rob another.

The owner of Trinni’s Variety Store told this newspaper yesterday that he received a telephone call about 7.30 am yesterday from a fellow stall owner and friend telling him that his stall had been robbed.

“When I got the call, I come down to find the grill yank open in the store… I go to the police station, and come back with them and check out the store, and then I hear how persons push dey hand in and tek milk that was on the counter,” he said. He related that this was done by shoppers or people passing through the market.

He could not give a value to the amount of foodstuff and money stolen.
The stall owner explained that he had been robbed once before. His mother, who was also at the stall when this newspaper visited the market yesterday, said she could not understand how persons’ stalls are being robbed and the City Constabulary doesn’t do anything about it.

Bystanders and other stall owners told Stabroek News that the robberies have been an ongoing problem and the constables just aren’t doing anything.

They also said that just three months ago, the stall next to Trinni’s Variety Store was robbed.
The stall owner of RJ Ashim said, “Dey try fa come here too, but something mek them ain’t get in.
Like these persons stay in the market whole night and rob the people stall.”

In the past, robberies were committed by persons who hid in the market until it was closed and then came out in the night and broke into stalls.

As a result, stall owners have beefed-up security with reinforced grills to prevent thieves from breaking into their stalls.
Police investigations are still in progress.
