Robber begs victims to accept compensation

A man on Tuesday admitted that he stole two BlackBerry phones from two nurses, calling it an act of frustration over his mother’s illness.

Travis Lewis, 19, was remanded to prison until a probation report is presented to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

He confessed that on November 28, in George-town, being armed with a knife, he robbed James Nelson of a BlackBerry Curve, valued at $40,000 and Julia Martindale of her BlackBerry Curve, which was valued $31,000.

Martindale and Nelson were walking along Camp Street when they were approached by Lewis and two other young men who then pointed a knife at them and demanded their articles, the court was told.

Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that the following day the couple was in the vicinity of Stabroek Market and spotted Lewis. They raised an alarm and pointed him out to police, who arrested him.

Lewis was in tears during the proceedings. “Mah worship, me mother pon bed rest and she sick, so all meh asking is for lil time fah pay dem back, I got $30,000 I cud give them now please ya worship ah de lil frustrated,” he said, while pleading with the couple to accept.

When the magistrate asked the two victims if they would accept the sum of money, Martindale said, “Your worship I will not accept the money, I told him to take the phones and give me back my bag.

I had a whole set a text books in it and he refused I don’t need no compensation.”
The magistrate then adjourned the matter to December 7 for a probation report.
