Stabroek Market jewellery stall robbed

A Stabroek Market jewellery stall was on Wednesday evening robbed of $3.8 million and an undisclosed quantity of gold and diamond jewellery and it is believed that it may have been an inside job.

Sanjaya’s Jewellery, stall number 38, section three, is suspected to have been broken into and robbed sometime between 20:00 hours on Wednesday to 05:00 hours yesterday morning during which there was a blackout.

Mayor and City Council spokesperson,Royston King, told Stabroek News yesterday that a report from acting City Constabulary Chief, Trevor Merriman, informed that a special investigation section of the city constabulary received information of the robbery at 07:15 hours yesterday and arrived on the scene 15 minutes later.

He noted that Sergeant 1035 Peters and Corporal Jacobs along with other ranks visited the stall and observed that the perpetrators had used a drill, cutting torch and circle saw to gain entry.

In addition to this, the lock of a metal safe within the stall was cut open and another was tampered with.
King said that the owner of the stall, Sanjay Jones, was contacted and questioned in relation to the break-in and robbery and he had informed them of the sum of cash that was missing. However, he did not reveal the value of the jewellery that was taken from the stall.

Photographs and fingerprints were taken by ranks of the Guyana Police Force who were headed by Sergeant Kissoon.

Stabroek News visited the stall yesterday but found it to be locked.
Efforts made to contact Jones proved futile.

This newspaper was told by sources at the market that the areas that were broken and tampered with had been cleaned, repainted and re-welded by the perpetrators.
Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
