Nesha’s flower shop owner convinced fire caused by arson

Jasmine Deonauth, owner of the Nesha’s Flower Land, remains convinced that arson was responsible for the fire at her business.

Deonauth, who is preparing to reopen tomorrow, said she suffered millions in losses in the fire of December 9, which damaged the building at the corner of Church and Carmichael streets. Fire Chief of the Guyana Fire Service Marlon Gentle had said that the fire was caused by a glue gun, which was left plugged in.

Deonauth said yesterday that the day after the fire, officials from the fire service went and inquired if a glue gun was normally used in the business and it was said that it may have caused the fire.

She further stated that while the officials were at the scene of the fire, the glue gun was not found as the main evidence of what started the fire.

As a result, she said that she still believes that arson was the cause of the fire.
Although the business was not insured, Deonauth was able to restock and she said it will be officially reopened tomorrow, selling fresh flowers and other articles. “…I knew that whatever happened that I would be able to start again,” she said.

Workers were seen yesterday sweeping the flower shop and adding final touches for the grand reopening. There were a number of figurines and vases on the shelves being readied for sale.
Deonauth added that for security purposes, she will install a surveillance camera.
