Why no water in the Parfaite Harmonie housing schemes?

Dear Editor,
There is a serious problem in Parfaite Harmonie and its surrounding housing schemes whereby most Monday mornings when residents start their preparations for the week’s activities, and especially for work, their frustrations begin. They are confronted by kitchen sinks with dirty dishes, piles of clothing that could not be washed, and above all the placing of personal hygiene in jeopardy. Why? No water.

The faucets seem to have gone dry. What other occurrences could ensue to defeat the aspirations and values of current residents? Flushing their toilets after use is an excruciating and humiliating uncertainty, especially when they have guests, for the fact is they never know when there is water in the toilet tanks.

Why are these housing schemes suffering these inadequacies when a proper infrastructure was promised at the time the land was sold to them? Anyone’s understanding would be that a proper infrastructure means where roads, power supplies, water, telephone and drainage are installed. Street lights are a necessary factor in deterring thieves.

Why then are the residents of Parfaite Harmonie, Schoon Ord, Westminister and other surrounding areas without street lights, better roads and drains, telephone lines, et al? Did the ministry intend that the infrastructure they installed meant solely the measuring of lots to be sold? And then there are the cows herded into the areas by the owners who some time ago used the very same lands as pasturage, and now ignore the fact that the lots are residential.

Who is to be held accountable for all these inadequacies? GWI is given time on TV, radio and in the newspapers to threaten those who do not pay bills with disconnection.

But why should anyone pay bills for what they are not receiving? GWI blames GPL for the lack of power to pump water to the customers they bill and threaten. And a majority of these billings are based on estimates, as most residents are without meters. There are entire days when nary a drop of water trickles into a home.

Doesn’t all this appear incongruous in the land of many waters? And whatever water is collected and stored when you can get it, has an oily brown sediment which is collected too.

The Ministry should stop lapsing in their delivery of a true infrastructure, and make the people to whom they sell house lots satisfied.

Yours faithfully,
Jorge Bowenforbes
