World Squash star Christopher Gordon to tour Guyana

One of the world’s best professional squash players Christopher Gordon is expected to visit Guyana during the festive season and engage some of the country’s top players including Nicolette Fernandes in exhibition matches at the Georgetown Club.

President of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Andrew Arjoon informed  this publication that Gordon, who is currently ranked 57th in the world by the Professional Squash Association, will visit Guyana during the Christmas season.  Gordon is a 26-year-old American professional player who competes all over the world on the PSA tour.  Gordon won the El Salvador Open last year and was the runner up at US Nationals earlier this year.

The six-foot, three inches Hartford, Connecticut resident had secured his first ever World Series win last October by completing a stunning upset against then World number 15 Hisham Mohd Ashour in the first round of the US Open.

According to Arjoon the GSA will be hoping to make the most of Gordon’s brief stay by staging a mini round-robin tournament from December 27-29 at the Georgetown Club’s squash facility.

The GSA president said that it is his association’s wish that Gordon will have a chance to play some exhibition squash with Guyana’s two-time men’s champion Alex Arjoon and four-time Caribbean champion Nicolette Fernandes who is currently ranked 48 in the world by the Women’s International Squash Player Association.

The GSA is also hoping that 2010 Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Senior Caribbean champion Richard Chin will be present to compete in the tournament. Apart from winning the 2010 Senior CASA title, Chin is also a former professional player. Currently age 43, Chin, has won several junior Caribbean titles and also represented the United States at the Pan American Games in 2006. Chin is a four-time all American squash player. Fernandes recently upset former world number one Rachael Grinham of Australia, who is currently ranked 16th in the world, at the Women’s World Open in Cayman Islands. Fernandes had also upset world number 15 Samantha Teran of Mexico at the Hong Kong Open a few weeks ago. Fernandes is currently in the second round of the World Open but is expected to return to Guyana in time for the mini-exhibition tournament with PSA player Gordon.
