Jamaican fined $30,000 for illegal entry

A Jamaican who said he came here to see his daughter was on Wednesday fined $30,000 and ordered to be deported for illegally entering Guyana when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Brait Thompson, who told the court he came to Guyana to see his daughter, pleaded guilty to the charge  which stated that on July 23 he entered Guyana by sea without the consent of an immigration officer.

The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question, the defendant entered Guyana illegally via speedboat through Springlands, Corentyne, from Suriname, and had subsequently been staying at the Secret Ville Hotel, Corentyne.

The prosecution told the court that Thompson came to Guyana to secure a Guyana passport and signed a declaration form purporting that he was Troy Samuel Rockcliffe; knowing that to be false.

The prosecutor told the court that it was while the defendant was at the Central Immigration and Passport Office to apply for the passport that it was discovered he had entered Guyana illegally after investigations were conducted.

When asked by the court if any additional charges are to be laid against the defendant, the prosecution said no.

When asked by the magistrate his purpose for coming to Guyana, Thompson told the court he has a daughter here. The mother of the child was also present to attest to this.

In the interim, the defendant is to be detained in Guyana at the Brickdam Police Station until such arrangements for his deportation are made.

In addition, the Chief Magistrate advised that he make an application to the Commissioner of Police if ever he wants to return to see his daughter.

Thompson was fined $30,000 or an alternative of three months imprisonment.
