An Albouystown security guard was beaten unconscious last night at a Regent Street store after representatives of the owners accused him of stealing from the property which he guarded.
Injured is Gary Bhagwandin said to be in his mid 30s.
According to reports, around 8 pm the man was at work at a building located on Regent Street, between Albert and Oronoque Streets, when his employers accused him of stealing from the property. He was given a sound beating by a group of men and he was subsequently taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) for treatment.
Bhagwandin sustained a broken hip and lacerations about the face and torso and according to his sister, Sheila (only name given) her younger brother was in a serious condition.
The woman, who is visiting Guyana from Canada, told Stabroek News that she received a call from the police and was informed that her brother was taken to the hospital in an unconscious state.
She said that when she arrived at the hospital, she was told by a group of men with whom her brother worked that he had fallen off of a building and hurt himself.
However, Bhagwandin regained consciousness and told her that he was beaten by several men who accused him of theft.
A police officer told the woman that her brother was safe-keeping several items for another person at his worksite and sometime after, his supervisors arrived at the store and levelled several accusations against him. He was subsequently attacked by the men who used pieces of wood and other objects as they dealt him blows about the body.
The woman said that the men, who apparently took her injured brother to the hospital, may have given the police their own version of events with the intention of her brother not being able to say what had happened.
She said that the men left the hospital soon after her brother related what happened and she called on the police to ensure that those responsible for her brother’s injuries be placed before the courts. “They can’t take the law into their hands”, she said.
The incident is being investigated by the police.
