In the wake of serious concerns about aviation accidents here, two safety seminars were hosted here by the civil aviation authority last month.
A statement from the aviation body today said that “Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn, and the management of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority have become increasingly concerned about the number of serious incidents and accidents involving aircraft occurring in Guyana during this year. The Authority considered it necessary to take steps to mitigate this unacceptable situation and decided to host a series of Safety Seminars with the intention of reminding members of the aviation industry of their duty to strive to maintain the highest standard of safety in their day to day operations.”
In recent months there has been a series of incidents where small craft have run off of runways or collided on landing – in one case with a man on a bike.
On December 13th and December 15th the GCAA provided two Flight Operations experts who are both very experienced pilots and Safety Regulators to deliver safety promotion presentations to over 90 Aviation Personnel ranging from Company Owners, Senior Executives, Chief Pilots, Maintenance Engineers, Air Traffic Controllers, Flight Operation Personnel, Airport Personnel and GCAA Inspectors, the statement from GCAA said.
The statement said that the “seminars were aimed at the prevention of three major types of accidents, Loss of Control in Flight, Controlled Flight into Terrain and Approach and Landing accidents including Runway Incursions and Excursions. In addition, they delivered an interactive symposium with Chief Pilots and Training Captains on the topic of Training to Proficiency and Risk Awareness.”
